Here is your Seven-Bullet Monday
1. A quote I am pondering:
"At some point, most of us reach a place where we are afraid to fail, where we instinctively avoid failure and stick only to what is placed in front of us or only what we are already good at. This confines us and stifles us. We can be truly successful only at something we are willing to fail at. If we are unwilling to fail, then we are unwilling to succeed." - Mark Manson
Our next big breakthrough might be the thing that scares us the most because we are afraid of failing. Maybe we don't want others to see us fail, worrying about what they might think or say about us. Manson's quote challenges us to put our egos on the floor and our courage on the ceiling and take that big step into the unknown.
2. A question I am asking myself:
How can I exercise more without injuring myself?
I have been hobbling around the gym with a pulled this and a strained that, and it seems to be taking forever to feel fully fit again. I don't enjoy stretching or warming up, but I know these are musts to stay strong and fit.
3. A book I am reading:
Maybe You Should Talk To Someone: A Therapist, HER Therapist, and Our Lives Revealed - Lori Gottlieb
This book is Lori Gottlieb's memoirs as a therapist in a Los Angeles practice, counselling her patients while she goes through her own crises and needs counselling herself. I enjoyed seeing how she gradually progressed to the root of her patient's problems, unpeeling layers of cover-up as she did so. It was also poignant to see her counsellor doing precisely the same with her, showing how problems are often easier to diagnose in others than ourselves, even for professional therapists. The book is full of wisdom, touching stories, and many funny moments.
4. What I learnt this week
With so many GHG measurement methodologies, it's hard to accurately compare one emitter with another emitter in a different jurisdiction
Different ways exist to measure GHGs emitted from combusted fuels and fugitive methane. Governments around the world have chosen one or another methodology, and this has resulted in material emission reporting differences between different countries. This is especially so in greener fuels like biodiesel, where the differences can be confounding. As businesses start to differentiate potential business partners based on their carbon footprint, we need to ensure one party does not gain an unfair advantage simply because their jurisdictional GHG reporting yardsticks are shorter than another.
5. The highlight of my week
Taking part in the Polar Plunge for Special Olympics BC
Along with F45 participants, I got to join in the Port Moody polar plunge in support of the Special Olympics this last weekend. It was a balmy 1°C on Saturday, and the sea temperature was all of 8°C. So, as you can imagine, it was not a protracted dip. Instead, it was, run into the water, put your head under, gasp, muffle your scream, and then get out of there as fast as humanely possible. The Fire Department made a nice big bonfire, which I appreciated as I tried to warm up afterwards.

Listening to Zero Podcast - # 28: How Europe Ditched Russian Fossil Fuels with Spectacular Speed
This podcast dives into Europe's remarkable one-year journey to eliminate its US$1 billion-a-day dependence on Russian fossil fuels. They say necessity is the mother of invention, which was undoubtedly the case for Europe. While much of the transition was to non-Russian fossil fuels, it did propel a massive deployment of heat pumps, solar panels and batteries, thereby permanently reducing fossil fuel use.
7. My challenge for you for this week
Practice your power poses
To understand power poses, listen to this two-minute condensed Amy Cuddy TED Talk using the link below
According to Cuddy, adopting the power pose before an important meeting reduces our stress and increases our confidence, improving our impact on others.
So before your next big meeting this week, get your chin up, your chest out, put your hands on your hips and take a wider stance. You are bound to leave a better impression as a result. #LookAtYouNow
Have a wonderful week
